What a Lake County kitchen remodel actually takes
April 2, 2026 · 6 min read
A kitchen remodel is not a cabinet color. In Lake County it is usually an older house — often concrete block — with circuits, plumbing, and a layout that made sense in 1978. The pretty part is the last month. The first month is what keeps the pretty part from leaking, tripping a breaker, or blocking the only path to the bedrooms.
A sequence that does not thrash the house
- Measure, and decide what stays. Moving a sink or a range is a different job than refacing.
- Check the panel. A new kitchen almost always wants more circuits than the house has spare.
- Open the wet wall before you order the slab of stone. What you find writes the real price.
- Order cabinets and stone with a lead time you have seen in writing.
- Protect the rest of the house. Dust in a living room is a scope item, not a surprise.
Where the money actually moves
Allowances are the usual leak. “Builder grade” means something different in every proposal. Name the cabinet line, the counter thickness, the faucet, and whether the backsplash is in the number. The second leak is structure: a wall someone hoped was not bearing, or a floor that needs to be leveled before tile will stay. The third is living through it. If the kitchen is your only kitchen, the temporary setup — microwave, fridge, a clear path — belongs in the plan.
What to have ready when you call
A few photos, the city, and whether you are staying in the house. A mood board helps. A Pinterest folder of twelve different kitchens does not. We can tell you quickly if you are in remodel territory or whether you are really describing an addition off the kitchen. Those are different permits, and they should not share a casual number.
